ID Card for Northerners’ Controversy Was Linked to Rochas Okorocha in 2014, Not Peter Obi — Arewa Stakeholder Warns Against Peddling False Narratives
An Arewa political stakeholder, Mallam Jabir has dismissed claims linking the controversial “ID card for Northerners” narrative to Peter Obi, insisting the issue actually dates back to 2014 and was associated with former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha.
Mallam Jabir in a post on X said the attempt to associate the matter with Obi amounts to misinformation and urged the public to be cautious about spreading politically motivated narratives.

According to him, revisiting old political issues and wrongly attributing them to current figures is capable of misleading the public and deepening ethnic and political tensions.
He stressed that the 2014 discussions around identity documentation in parts of the country were tied to policy debates during Okorocha’s administration, not the current political discourse involving Obi.

The stakeholder therefore warned against what he described as deliberate attempts to distort historical facts for political gain, calling for responsible communication in public discussions.

‘’It is really sad and unfortunate to see false narratives about Mr. Peter Obi being recycled without evidence.
‘’The “ID card for northerners” controversy was linked to Rochas Okorocha’s 2014 Imo initiative not Mr. Peter Obi.

‘’Facts matter and credible platforms must uphold basic standards of fact-checking before amplifying misinformation.’’
