‘The Same Shameless People Who Threatened Civil War Over Petrol Price Below ₦100 In 2012 Are Now Defending ₦1,050 Per Litre’ — Dr. Ogunsanya

Social commentator, Olufunmilayo Ogunsanya known online as #OurFavOnlineDoc has criticised what he described as the hypocrisy of some political actors over the sharp rise in petrol prices in Nigeria.

In a post on X, Ogunsanya said many of the individuals who fiercely opposed fuel price increases during the administration of Goodluck Jonathan in 2012 are now defending petrol prices exceeding ₦1,050 per litre under the government of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

‘’The people who brought the country to a standstill during occupy Nigeria 2012 over petrol price of less than 100naira, some of them shameless animals even threatened to start a ‘civil war’ if petrol price goes to 97naira per litre, These same people are today defending petrol price at 1,050 naira per litre.’’

Nigeria witnessed mass protests during the Occupy Nigeria protest after the federal government announced the removal of fuel subsidy, which pushed petrol prices from about ₦65 to over ₦140 per litre at the time. The protests spread across major cities and drew nationwide participation from labour unions, civil society groups and ordinary citizens.
