Northern Elders Ask Akpabio to Resign Over Alleged Sexual Misconduct
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) on Wednesday strongly condemned the alleged mistreatment of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, calling for an independent investigation into the incident.
NEF also demanded Akpabio’s immediate resignation to ensure a fair and impartial inquiry, free from any potential interference.
In a statement, NEF spokesperson Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere denounced the reported public intimidation of the female senator, calling it unacceptable, especially in an era that champions gender sensitivity and inclusivity on a global scale.
The forum urged authorities to take swift action to uphold the integrity of the Senate.
Jiddere stated: “NEF is closely monitoring the ongoing conflict in the Senate between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Distinguished Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District.
“It is deeply troubling that, at a time when gender sensitivity, inclusiveness, and respect for fundamental human rights—particularly the dignity of women in high-level public service—are being emphasized worldwide, a female senator is facing public intimidation and mistreatment.

The treatment of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan by the Senate President is wholly unacceptable.”
Expressing disappointment, the forum described Akpabio’s actions as an abuse of power, warning that such behavior undermines the Senate’s integrity and sets a dangerous precedent.
“In light of this, the NEF calls for an immediate, independent investigation into the matter to uphold the sanctity of the Nigerian Senate. Furthermore, the NEF demands that the Senate President step aside to ensure a fair and unbiased investigation, free from any potential interference,” he said.
“As the highest law-making institution in Nigeria, the Senate must uphold the values of fairness, justice, and respect. Any deviation from these principles risks damaging Nigeria’s reputation in the international community.”
