Disconnection Of Electricity To Nigerian High Commission In South Africa Reflects Retrogression Under Tinubu — Buhari’s Former Aide Onochie
A former aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie, has described the recent disconnection of electricity at the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa as a sign of retrogression under Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa reportedly had its electricity disconnected due to non-payment of utility bills, sparking concerns over the management of the country’s diplomatic missions.
The disconnection was publicly highlighted by a South African official on X (formerly Twitter), drawing international attention to the incident. Observers described the situation as a major embarrassment for Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation.

According to Onochie, the incident reportedly caused by non-payment of utility bills is a national embarrassment, worsened by the fact that it was publicly highlighted by a South African official on X.
She linked the power outage to a broader diplomatic vacuum, noting that Nigeria has operated without appointed ambassadors for nearly three years. Onochie further said some embassy staff are owed several months of salaries, leaving missions understaffed, demoralised, and unable to function optimally.
She warned that lack of proper leadership in foreign missions jeopardizes Nigerians abroad, undermines foreign policy, and damages national dignity.
