“Rise Up and Defend Our Democracy,” Peter Obi Urges Nigerians Ahead Nationwide Protest Against One-Party System and Tinubu’s Tyrannical Rule
As Nigerians take to the streets to protest and demand their rights on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, leading opposition figure Peter Obi has urged citizens to rise in defense of Nigeria’s democracy amid growing concerns over the country’s political direction.
The statement is coming at a time when Nigeria’s democracy is on the edge following plots by the ruling All Progressives Congress APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC’s to plunge the country into a one party state and kill opposition.
Ahead of a planned nationwide, Obi in a post on X urged Nigerians to “rise up and defend our democracy” ahead of planned nationwide protests aimed at challenging what has been described as the emergence of a one-party system under Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Obi warned that continued erosion of democratic norms threatens the nation’s future, calling on citizens to peacefully mobilize and demand accountability from the government.
‘’We, members and leaders of the ADC, and other well-meaning Nigerians, lovers of democracy, are saying that our democracy must not be killed. We say NO to a one-party system and for that today we’re calling out Nigerians who believe in unity, peace, and security of our country to join us as we defend democracy in our land.’’
