Nigerians Thrown in Darkness As Power Grid Collapses, First Time in 2024
Once more, Nigerians nationwide find themselves plunged into darkness as the national power grid overseen by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) experienced its initial collapse of 2024.
After the grid collapsed on Sunday morning, its capacity plummeted from 2,407 megawatts to a mere 31 MW by midday and eventually reached zero by 1 p.m.
The statement from Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) regarding the collapse of the grid indicates a significant disruption in power distribution. When the grid collapses, it typically results in widespread power outages affecting numerous customers and regions.
However, AEDC’s assurance that power will be restored once the grid is stabilized is a common response to such situations.
Restoring power after a grid collapse involves identifying and addressing the issues that caused the collapse in the first place, which can include technical failures, overloads, or other disruptions in the electrical system.

During such times, customers are often advised to conserve energy and to be patient while distribution companies work to restore power.
“The Management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) wishes to inform its valued customers that the power outage being experienced is as a result of a system failure from the national grid at 11:21 hours today, 4th February 2024 which has led to a nationwide power outage.
“Be rest assured that we are working with the relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid is stabilized. We appeal for your patience.” the statement signed by the AEDC management read.
In September 2023, the TCN documented 46 grid collapses nationwide spanning from 2017 to 2022.
Specifically, there were 15 grid collapses in 2017, 12 in 2018, 9 in 2019, 4 in 2020, 2 in 2021, and 4 in 2022.
May God have mercy upon us.
