Nasarawa governor: Gov. Sule, I didn’t worry about losing my seat
Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule stated he has no concerns about losing at the Supreme Court.
Sule made this claim during a Friday interview on Politics Today on Channels Television.
Despite this, the governor expressed his satisfaction that the legal battle over the governorship election has ended with the Supreme Court’s Friday affirmation of his election.
David Umbugadu, a candidate for governor of Nasarawa State from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), filed an appeal against Sule’s victory, but the Supreme Court denied it.
Sule remarked, “I’m glad it’s over. We can now concentrate on the task at hand and move on because it is now complete.
The governor stated that, prior to the ruling of the Apex Court, he never harbored any fear of losing his seat.
“I was anticipating victory because, in the tribunal, all three of the judges couldn’t even come to an agreement with one another.” he declared.
“One of them had a very thorough report and he voted for us and stated we won; the other two disagreed with us, therefore we lost.
He stated, “We chose from there and proceeded to the Appeal Court, where there are now three judges with more expertise. All three of them unanimously declared that we had won, so you can imagine that we went into the Supreme Court with great confidence and that I had no doubts whatsoever about the fact that we would prevail.
Governor Sule declared that the people of the state had overwhelmingly voted for him.
He went on to say that internal disputes, not a decline in popularity inside the state, were the reason his party had lost senatorial seats.
He insisted that all of the officials in his party supported him both before and after the March 18, 2023, gubernatorial election.
The PDP candidate’s lawsuit was dismissed by the Supreme Court’s panel of justices on Friday for lack of merit in a unanimous ruling; no costs were imposed.
Remember that on October 12, 2023, the Election Petition Tribunal in Lafia proclaimed David Ombugadu the winner of the poll, nullifying Governor Sule’s victory.
Governor Sule and the All Progressives Congress (APC) appealed the tribunal’s decision in an attempt to reverse the decision.
In its ruling on November 23, 2023, the court of appeals invalidated the tribunal’s decision and upheld Sule’s election as governor.
The appellate court ruled that the panel erred in relying on the testimony of eight PDP witnesses, none of whose sworn statements were front-loaded with the petition.
