The Sunday Hifoxnew’s investigations on Friday show that over 100 properties, including shops, private homes, and places of worship, were set on fire during the recent clash in the Mangu local government area of Plateau State. This is in contrast to the police account, which stated that only 10 houses were destroyed.

Remember that on Thursday, through the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, Zone 4, Ebong Eyibio, stated, “…so far, over 10 corpses have been recovered from various locations, two injured persons are currently receiving treatment at the hospital, one car, and 10 houses were burned down.”

Although the exact number of deaths at the time of this report is unknown, reports of burning houses in Kwashlalek and Sabon Kaswa include 27 and five deaths, respectively, as well as deaths in other nearby communities.

Testimonies from survivors

Meshach Fwangshak, a youngster, is presently undergoing treatment at the General Hospital in Mangu after suffering injuries near the Church of Christ In Nations, or COCIN Church, in Chichim.

“I dodged when I noticed some troops approaching and they started shooting at me. I had to emerge after hiding beneath their car and being discovered by the driver. After missing the first shot at my leg, one of them tried again, injuring me while I was still running. He then used a rope, threw it, and grabbed me with it. He shot me on my leg once more while I was falling.

Another homeowner, Kyenpia Polycarp, reported that Fulani arrived between nine and ten o’clock at night. While I was at home, I heard the gunfire and the sound of their footsteps as they ran through the village. Each of us felt afraid. As the gunfire persisted, I seized my kids and hurried inside the restroom. All of us were on the ground.

“I don’t know why they stopped, but they were shooting at my house when they got close. After the gunfire stopped, I heard screams all around me as numerous houses were set on fire. Upon our departure, we found that everyone who had congregated in my neighbor’s complex had been set ablaze inside the home. We have moved on from the village to the neighboring community, which is governed by Barkin Ladi local government area.

Mutfwang relaxes curfew

Meanwhile, the Mangu 24-hour curfew has been loosened by Governor Caleb Mutfwang. Until further notice, the curfew is to be implemented every day from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m.

A statement said that the evaluation came after the local government area’s security situation improved as a result of strategic interactions with leaders from various ethnic and religious backgrounds.
