Lekki Deep Seaport Berths Largest Container Vessel
The largest container vessel, named “Maersk Edirne,” has recently been docked at Lekki Deep Seaport by the Nigerian government, as revealed by the Nigerian Port Authority’s official X account on Sunday.
Measuring an overall length of 367 meters and boasting a breadth of 48.2 meters, the vessel has an impressive gross registered tonnage (grt) of 142,131 metric tonnes and a deadweight tonnage (dwt) of 147,340 metric tonnes.
With a total cargo onboard amounting to 3,376, the vessel was safely navigated on Sunday.
Mohammed Bello-Koko, the managing director of the Nigerian port authority, expressed the country’s commitment to tapping into the potential of the marine and blue economy in light of this significant development.
“The authority under my watch is poised to provide the leadership and technical guidance required to maximize the potential inherent in our marine and blue economy,” he said.

Daily Post reported that prior to the arrival of Maersk Edirne, the largest commercial ships navigating Nigerian waters were “MV Stadelhorn” at Onne Port and “MSC Maureen” at Tincan Island Port Complexes. This significant event has prompted calls from both industrial experts and Nigerians for the enhancement of ports nationwide, including those in Onne and Port-Harcourt in Rivers State, Warri Port, and Calabar Port.
