Kidnappers Stop Communicating With Family After Taking Ransom for Imo Lawyer

Kidnappers have stopped communicating after collecting a N2.1 million ransom for Jeffery Ucheagwu, a lawyer and active member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Young Lawyers’ Forum, Anaocha Branch.

He was kidnapped along the Owerri axis in Imo State. A close friend of Ucheagwu told FIJ that the victim, who was previously with the Barnawa Branch of the NBA in Kaduna, was abducted while travelling.

His whereabouts remain unknown nearly two weeks after he was kidnapped.

“The family has not heard from the kidnappers since the ransom was paid. We have also written a petition to the Commissioner of Police to help in investigating the kidnap,” Ucheagwu’s friend said.

The petition was submitted on Monday, and on Tuesday, the brother of the kidnapped lawyer met with the investigating police officer.

According to the victim’s friend, the kidnappers contacted Ucheagwu’s family three days after the incident, using Ucheagwu’s phone to demand a ransom of  N10 million.

The family, after negotiation, said they paid N2.1 million into an account provided by the abductors.

However, shortly after the payment, the kidnappers switched off Ucheagwu’s phone. Communication has since ceased.

Ucheagwu’s friend continues to plead with the public and the police to come to their aid and help with recovering the abducted lawyer.
