JUST IN: NLC Shuts Labour Party Secretariat, Demands Abure’s Immediate Sack

On Wednesday, the Nigeria Labour Congress made a dramatic entrance at the national secretariat of the Labour Party in Abuja, vehemently protesting against the party’s forthcoming national convention scheduled for the end of the month.

The Congress additionally called for the removal of Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the party, citing accusations of organizing a clandestine convention without consulting key stakeholders.

This proposed convention has sparked a confrontation between Abure and both the NLC and the House of Representatives caucus. Workers have accused Abure of orchestrating the downfall of the Labour Party, but police have prevented the protesting workers from gaining entry into the party secretariat.

In response to an open letter penned by the Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission on Friday, the National Working Committee of the Labour Party accused Ajaero of desperate attempts to replace Abure. The letter raised concerns about Abure and the NWC allegedly planning a national convention in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, on March 27.

“That given the intransigence of the National Chairman of the Labour Party to unilaterally hold a National Convention of the Labour Party, financial rascality and contempt for the leadership of the NLC, the NLC State Councils and State Political Committees should mobilise workers to picket all the State Secretariats of the Labour Party, scheduled for Wednesday, 20th March 2024,” the letter partly read.

The convention purportedly targeted the re-election of Abure as the exclusive administrator of the Labour Party, amidst apprehensions of secrecy surrounding the affair.

The political faction within the NLC has declared the scheduled convention as unauthorized and is urging Abure’s prompt resignation from the position of party chairman.

Additionally, they advocate for the establishment of an interim transition committee to orchestrate a lawful and comprehensive national convention for the party.

Contrarily, the leadership of the LP rebuffs the directive, claiming it stems from Ajaero’s alleged ambition to assume the role of the party’s next national chairman.
