In Osogbo, the capital of Osun state, a horrific car accident on Tuesday claimed the lives of seven people, including three schoolchildren.
The incident which occurred around 9 am WOCDIF area, along Osun West bypass road involved an a commercial bus, a motorcycle and a trycircle carrying the school pupils.
According to reports, the commercial bus bearing the license plate RBC15 ZN was approaching from the stadium end when it swerved off its lane and struck the trike and the motorcycle in front of the WOCDIF event center.
Four people were instantly killed when the bus driver abruptly swerved out of his lane and collided with the moving trike and motorcycle, according to eyewitness Akande Babawale.
Agnes Ogungbemi, the Federal Road Safety Corps spokeswoman in Osun, confirmed the occurrence and stated that the commercial bus’s overspeeding and a ruptured tire were the causes.
She further stated that four adults, two male children, and one female youngster were among the seven people who perished in the tragedy.
“Three injured victims were later confirmed dead, and one female child is receiving treatment,” she said. “Four people died on the spot, four injured persons were taken to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital.”
The cars were brought to the Dugbe Police Divisional Headquarters in Osogbo, she continued.
Ademola Adeleke, the governor of Osun State, expressed shock at hearing about the tragedy and conveyed his deep pain over the citizens’ tragic deaths.
Following the event in Osogbo, Olawale Rasheed, his spokeswoman, released a statement expressing the government’s and the people of Osun state’s sincere sympathies to the families of those affected by the incident.
Governor Adeleke reaffirmed the appeal for drivers to drive carefully and to follow all traffic laws, stating that the State Government, headed by him, will collaborate with the appropriate authorities to improve road safety.
I am deeply saddened by the news of the horrific incident that claimed five lives in Osogbo and left five others with varied degrees of injuries. My heart hurts so much, and I would like to take this opportunity to express my sympathy to the families of the departed.
“It is my prayer that God Almighty repose their souls and give their loved ones the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses occasioned by their death. As a government, we will give the needed support to the injured and pray for their quick recoveries”, the Governor stated.
