If Nigerian Leaders Can Present Fake Documents To INEC Without Consequences, Why Should Children Go To School When They Can Simply Forge Certificates — Oseni

Broadcaster and journalist, Rufai Oseni, has questioned the moral message Nigeria sends to young people if politicians accused of presenting questionable documents to the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC continue to face no consequences.

Speaking on X, Oseni argued that when leaders can submit fake documents to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) without repercussions, it undermines the importance of education and integrity in society.

He insinuated that such a situation could discourage children from valuing education, as they may begin to believe that forging certificates is an easier path to success.

Recall that National Assembly had recently removed certificate forgery and age falsification as valid grounds for challenging election results at tribunals in the newly signed electoral act.

The development has been described as one that could erupt fresh constitutional storm with legal scholars, civil society actors, and political stakeholders warning that the National Assembly may have set the stage for a confrontation between legislative authority and constitutional supremacy.

At the heart of the controversy lies Section 138 of the Act, a provision that critics say narrows the grounds upon which election results may be challenged, while conspicuously omitting qualification, including allegations of certificate forgery, as a basis for election petitions.
