VIDEO: ‘There Is No Democracy Without Opposition’ — Sen Dickson Warns Tinubu Against One-Party Plot in Nigeria
Seriake Dickson, Senator representing Bayelsa West and national leader of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), has warned Bola Tinubu against any attempt to push Nigeria toward a one-party system, saying democracy cannot survive without strong opposition.
Dickson made the statement while speaking in a video shared on X, where he stressed that any threat to one opposition party is a threat to all opposition parties.
He said opposition groups must remain united to defend Nigeria’s democracy.

“There can be no democracy without opposition. A threat to one opposition party is a threat to all opposition parties. We stand united and together to defend Nigeria’s democracy,” Dickson said.
The senator spoke while receiving defectors from other political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and the Labour Party (LP).
He positioned the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) as a platform committed to unity among opposition parties amid concerns about political dominance.
Dickson warned against excessive use of power, saying leadership should be guided by restraint and the public good.
“Leadership is not about doing whatever you can do. Leadership is about restraint in the exercise of power for the public good. Even when something is not to your benefit, you should do it and encourage it for the benefit of the public, particularly to protect constitutional democracy,” he said.
He also stressed the need to protect Nigeria’s multi-party system, warning that weakening opposition voices could threaten democratic stability.
