Chaos Rocks Senate As Lalong Steps Down From Electoral Committee Following Heated Argument On Reforms

Chaos broke out on the Senate floor today during deliberations on a conference committee to harmonize amendments to the Electoral Act 2026, after Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume forcefully pushed for the inclusion of Senator Simon Lalong in the panel.

Rising to speak, Ndume insisted procedure must be respected, declaring:

“You have to put the chairman… that is the procedure. How can you harmonize without that person?” – a statement that immediately triggered loud objections and overlapping arguments across the chamber.

As senators shouted over one another and leadership struggled to contain the disorder, Senator Lalong expressed frustration with the tone of the exchange, announcing:

“Mr. President, I take exception… I’m withdrawing from the committee.”
