‘’Obi’s Defection Exposed APC’s Fear Of United Opposition,’’ Atiku Talks Up Chaos Within Ruling Party Following New ADC Alignment
A former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has said former presidential candidate Peter Obi’s recent public declaration of ADC membership in Enugu has exposed the All Progressives Congress APC’s fear of a united opposition.
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, recently defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He announced the move on December 31, 2025, stating that he’s joining the ADC to be part of a broader opposition coalition aiming to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Obi’s decision is seen as a strategic move to consolidate opposition forces, with him joining other notable politicians like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi in the ADC.
However, The APC reaction to Peter Obi’s defection has been dismissive, with Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, describing Obi as a “nomadic politician continuing a wild goose chase”.

Bwala stated that Obi’s move to the ADC was driven by personal ambition and that he would likely end up as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in 2027.
Other APC officials, like Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to Tinubu on Information and Strategy, have also downplayed Obi’s defection, saying it’s inconsequential and that Obi is only seeking relevance.
Sunday Dare, another presidential aide, criticized Obi, saying his ambition has imprisoned him and that his presidential aspirations lack democratic credentials.
Responding to the opposition claims, Atiku in a statement issued by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, said Obi’s defection has created chaos in the ruling party camp, noting that the Obi’s move triggered “open boasts by a serving minister and presidential aides” about plans to undermine the ADC.

“The recent public declaration of ADC membership by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in Enugu, the political heartbeat of the Southeast, triggered open boasts by a serving minister and presidential aides about plans to undermine the party. Their fear is evident.
“Let there be no ambiguity: the ADC is determined to end the misfortune imposed by the Tinubu-led APC. No amount of intimidation, intrigue, or sabotage will derail this rescue mission. Nigeria will not surrender its democracy without a fight,” he added.
