‘’APC Government Using State Power To Persecute Perceived Political Adversaries’’ Peter Obi, Other Opposition Leaders Cry Out
There are mounting concerns that state power is being deployed not for prevention of economic crimes, but for persecution of perceived political adversaries, with the ultimate aim of weakening opposition voices and dismantling Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.
Nigerian opposition leaders including former Senate President David Mark, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bode George, Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023 election, Peter Obi among others sounded the alarm in a statement warning that the country’s multi-party democracy is under threat.

They also accused Bola Tinubu’s administration of using anti-corruption agencies, like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to intimidate and persecute opposition figures, with the aim of weakening opposition voices and dismantling Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
The opposition leaders claimed that there’s a deliberate effort to bring all state governments under the control of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) through pressure exerted via anti-graft investigations.

While highlighting their demands, they called on Nigerians to remain eternally vigilant to ensure that the Tinubu does not transform the country into a de facto one-party state – as witnessed in Lagos over the last 25 years, where opposition leaders were silenced, coerced or induced into irrelevance.
They also called for reforms, including the depoliticization of the EFCC, and the establishment of an independent review body to examine public accounts from 2015 to 2025.
