Nigeria Now Disgraced Nation — Peter Obi Condemns Tear-Gassing Of Protesters Demanding Free And Fair Elections
Peter Obi, former 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has slammed the Nigerian authorities over the tear-gassing of peaceful protesters calling for free, fair, and credible elections, describing the country as a “now disgraced nation.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Obi accused those in power of betraying democratic values by targeting citizens exercising their constitutionally guaranteed rights.
“Those who yesterday claimed to be champions of democracy have today become destroyers of our democracy and the worst enemies of good governance,” Obi said, urging Nigerians to resist what he described as ongoing attacks on the nation’s future.

He called for unity among citizens to safeguard democracy and ensure electoral integrity.
Obi also demanded the mandatory real-time electronic transmission of polling unit results, saying transparency in elections is essential to restore trust in Nigeria’s democratic system.
He stressed that without credible elections, justice and good governance remain unattainable.
Concluding his statement, Obi appealed to Nigerians to remain steadfast and committed to change.
“May God grant us the strength to build a better country, founded on free, fair, and credible elections, justice, and good governance,” he said, reaffirming his long-held message that “a new Nigeria is possible.”
