Rejection Of Mandatory Transmission Of Results Means APC Govt Will Do Anything To Subvert Will Of Nigerians —Inibehe Effiong
Human rights lawyer and public affairs analyst, Inibehe Effiong has faulted the rejection of mandatory electronic transmission of election results by the Nigerian Senate, describing the move as proof that the All Progressives Congress APC led government is prepared to do anything to subvert the will of Nigerians.
Effiong’s comments on X follow the Senate’s recent consideration of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2026, in which lawmakers voted against an amendment to Clause 60, Subsection 3 that sought to compel presiding officers to upload results electronically from polling units to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing (IReV) portal in real time — a reform widely advocated as a way to improve transparency and limit opportunities for result manipulation.

He argued that rejecting the proposal exposes a deliberate attempt by those in power to retain loopholes in the electoral process.
According to him, the campaign for fundamental electoral reform has been killed by the National Assembly following the legislature’s rejection of the proposal.
While bracing Nigerians for the worse under the current dispensation, Effiong said the decision reflects the ruling party’s lack of commitment to electoral integrity and illustrates a broader strategy by the APC government to maintain control of the electoral process at the expense of voters’ expressed desires for credible elections.
