Agreement Between Nigeria and France on Tax Revenue, Data Management Should Be Made Transparent — Peter Obi Tells Tinubu
Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has called on the Tinubu-led Government to ensure transparency regarding the recently reported tax cooperation agreement between Nigeria and France.
He said agreements relating to tax administration, revenue systems, and data management demand a high level of openness because of their direct impact on public trust and institutional credibility.
Obi stated that he is not opposed to engaging foreign expertise to support reforms in the country’s tax system.

However, he stressed that such partnerships must be clearly justified, with Nigerians properly informed about their objectives, scope, and expected outcomes.
The former Anambra State governor highlighted Nigeria’s strong pool of qualified tax professionals, advisory firms, and globally recognised consultancies already operating locally.
He questioned why external partnerships are prioritised over strengthening existing local capacity, arguing that sustainable reform should build institutions from within.

Obi noted that his concerns come at a time of severe economic strain, with over 60 per cent of Nigerians living in multidimensional poverty and youth unemployment remaining high.
He urged the Federal Government to publish the full MoU and clearly outline its benefits, warning that any agreement lacking transparency and public confidence risks further eroding trust in government.
