Referee Banned for Six-Month Over Messi Autograph Request

According to ESPN, referee Marco Antonio Ortiz Nava has been suspended for six months after requesting Lionel Messi’s autograph.
Nava approached Messi following Inter Miami’s CONCACAF Champions Cup win over Kansas City last week, asking for an autograph intended for a family member with special needs.

This action led CONCACAF, North America’s football governing body, to launch disciplinary proceedings against the 36-year-old referee. As a result, Nava has been “banned from officiating in CONCACAF competitions for six months.”

The report also noted that if Nava repeats the offense, he could face an “indefinite ban.”
Despite the suspension from CONCACAF events, Nava will continue to officiate in Mexico’s Liga MX, which is governed by the CONCACAF confederation.
